AutoCAD started as a drawing program developed by A.L.R. “Rick” Williams in 1975. The program ran on the first commercial microcomputer, the Altair 8800, which was released in 1975. Williams, a young graduate student at the University of Utah, taught himself to program in assembly language and created a graphics library. After publishing the program in a local computer magazine, people started to send him their own programs to be tested. In 1976, he was hired by the William M. Stewart Company, which made a successful pitch to the Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines to design a prototype for a microcomputer-based graphics system.
